tables so green

So yesterday, I played in the Pot-limit Omaha high-low split event in the WCOOP at PokerStars.

1303 people entered, many of them the very best PLO/8 players in the world.

Somehow, I managed to play smart, get lucky a couple of times, not get unlucky a couple of times, and finished 70th.

Holy shit. I finished 70th out of 1303 players, many of them the best in the world.

If I hadn't suffered a really bad beat by a hand I had completely dominated pre-flop, I probably could have finished in the 30s.

CardPlayer.com even included my finish in its coverage of the event:

Actor Wil Wheaton also made it past the bubble in the tournament, landing himself a 70th place payday of $742.71.

Even though I've made it very, very deep in events before (top 20%, including 40th at a Legends of Poker preliminary event this year) it's been in events where 10% makes the money, so this was my first tournament cash. More than the money it put into my pocket (which is going directly into the fix up the house fund, with a little skimmed off the top to buy some new CDs) it took a Prove To Everyone That I Deserve To Be On Team PokerStars monkey off my back that was starting to dig its claws into my brains pretty deep.

So I'm skipping around just a little bit today.

Okay, a whole lot.

Okay, the most.

Seriously.

ROCK!!1

Actor Wil Wheaton?? WTF? The Wil Wheaton I know is a writer!! Congrats, dude!

Whoo-hoo! Congrats on your win. That is so cool that you "proved" yourself to....yourself :)

Can I borrow 5 bucks? Ha! Kidding!

You may want to watch the skipping thing....people might talk

Right on, Wil. I remember the first time I walked away from a blackjack table with more than 3 grand in my pocket...

Someday I'll make my way down and catch a game with you.

/wistful sigh

Thats Awesome!! Good Job Wil!!! Can I borrow $200?

Woohoo! Congrats, Wil!!

It was just a matter of time, dude.

Excellent job, Wil! I wouldn't even enter a PLO/8 event because I don't know how to play it well enough to make it worth the entry fee. Congrats on the great finish, and I'll see you on PokerStars soon!

Wooyeah! \m/

Wil:
Sounds like you had a pretty good day. Anytime you are so close to being in the top 5% of any competition, it’s a productive and generally great day. So congrats on your performance. Since it appears that you had not performed that well in some other recent events (from the sense of your comments … not any direct knowledge there of course), you apparently have every reason to do a skip-around. I know what those “funds” are like. Ours is to upgrade the house and property (since nothing’s really broken right now) so we can sell it as we plan/hope to build a newer version somewhere else. Also, there’s always the college fund to be planning for …. sigh. Anyway … I nice pat on the back on your accomplishment!

sooooooo not rigged!

Good job, Wil!

Well done, sir. Now win the HORSE! :)

Great job Wil! Congrats on placing!

I posted in a comment before that I had no interest in poker at all... and I have to say, or admit, rather... that I sat and watched the WSoP the other night, and really enjoyed it a lot. I never would have stopped on that channel if I hadn't read your stories here, so thanks again!

Congratulations, Wil. I got the poker bug several months ago and am happy to confess that reading you is how I got interested in the first place.

It sucks that you had to miss your own tourney to play this one, but I would have done the same thing. Two tabling Holdem and Omaha at the same time makes my brain go blooey.

Kudos, Mr. Wheaton.

What do you think your chances are in the $5K HORSE? (And no, that's not meant to make me sound like a douche -- just curious. I'll be pulling for you!)

so, the real question here is, which cds did you buy?

When I heard of the new law that essentially bans online gaming, I instantly thought of you and this post I had just read. What is your take on the recent ruling?

The Happiest Days of Our Lives

  • These are the stories Wil loves to tell, because they are the closest to his heart: stories about being a huge geek, passing his geeky hobbies and values along to his own children, and vividly painting what it meant to grow up in the ’70s and come of age in the ’80s as part of the video game/D&D/BBS/Star Wars figures generation.

Buy Just A Geek: The Audiobook

  • "This journey is a fascinating read, made even more intimate and fulfilling by Wil's narrative. This is not just an audio book, it's a glimpse into the psyche of the man who considers himself . . . Just a Geek."
