Moving back to wilwheaton.net becomes less and less of a priority every day. The number of people who read what I write via some form of syndication outnumbers the number of people who come to the actual site, and the number of you who take the time to comment (which actually means a lot to me -- it feels like I'm talking to en empty room, otherwise) is very small, so what does the address matter?
There's a sense of incompleteness that gnaws at me a little bit, and I don't like that. It feels like an unfinished symphony -- wait. That's too grand. It feels like a car I bought with the intention of restoring, but now sits on my lawn, Layne Meyer-style, with no cute French foreign exchange student to blow up Ricky's mom and inspire me to get it running again.
With one child about to go to college, and a home that desperately needs some renovations*, every single thing I do comes down to investment and return, and right now I don't see the point in investing the time and energy to redesign and relaunch a physical web address, where what ultimately matters is the content, right?
I'm having a really hard time coming up with a compelling reason to do it, and I thought that maybe someone who is reading this could help me come up with one.
Update: I left this as a comment, but I don't know if anyone is reading them besides me, so here it is:
I don't know if anyone is reading these comments (there's over 180 right now) but I have read every one of them, and I want to sincerely thank you all for taking the time to leave them.
I wasn't fishing for comments; I honestly wasn't. (Having said that, it really means a lot to me to know that there actually are people beyond the footlights in this darkened theater.) I just get too close to things from time to time, and need some perspective from others to help me see where I am, and that's why I asked. It really means a lot to me that so many of you took the time to get a typekey account (yeah, it's lame, but it's an absolute necessity for me) and that so many of you made the effort to come over from livejournal or your rss reader and share your thoughts with me.
I think I know what's at the root of the WWdN vs. WWdN:iX conflict within me, but it's too much to put here right now. I think it will make a good post in the future, though, and in any case, it's good for me to take some time and ponder it, with the perspective your comments have added.
Thank you, everyone. Sincerely
*I could rant and rave about this until I work myself into such a rage, I start smashing things, but can someone tell me why, exactly, you pay for homeowner's insurance if every single claim you file -- because your house is old and things break and need replacing -- is denied because your house is old?
