Buy The Happiest Days of Our Lives

  • These are the stories Wil loves to tell, because they are the closest to his heart: stories about being a huge geek, passing his geeky hobbies and values along to his own children, and vividly painting what it meant to grow up in the ’70s and come of age in the ’80s as part of the video game/D&D/BBS/Star Wars figures generation.

i won't pretend fun things aren't still fun out of fear of looking silly

Remember how much fun it was to build forts in your house when you were a kid?

My kids stopped building forts about three years ago, but when they did build them, we were hardcore about making plans, setting up different rooms, stocking one of those rooms with snacks, and somehow covering the entire thing with blankets and towels and pillow cases and anything else that was around, so not one inch of it was open (other than the "offical" entrances, of course.)

The last time I helped the kids build a fort, it went through three rooms and was more of a sprawling network of tunnels, with rooms under tables and between arm chairs, with multiple defense points (because we could have been invaded, of course) and two secret rooms. Like most of the things I've done with them over the last decade or so, determining who was having the most fun was a very close call.
