binary scarf, space invader socks

I don't know how to knit, but if I did, I would totally make this scarf and these socks.

If youre reading my blog, you probably got here from my wifes blog, and so youre probably a knitter.  Well, Im a geek.  And this post by Wil Wheaton (very brief) may have achieved knitter/geek synergistic perfection.  Heh... [Read More]

And with this one post, you have certain risen to the top of my wife's "must read" list (you've been near the top, but now...) We've been readers for a couple of years, but she's a knitter, and reads that site daily. Just the fact that you mentioned will tickle her no end.

Er, that's "certainLY"

That scarf reminds me of Doctor Who...

The scarf reminds me of the female character from Neal Stephenson's Baroque Trilogy. At one point she uses crosspoint to keep a journal in binary! If the top stitch lays to the right it's a 0 if it lays to the left it's a 1. If I remember correctly she learned the binary language from the German natural philosopher Leibniz. If you have not read these books then you are not the geek you think you are!
Does the scarf contain a binary message or is it just random one's and zero's?

Well, now I know what to make my geek friends for Christmas! LOL Those are wild!

Those are awesome! I bet I could totally get my husband's grandma to knit them too. She made him and his Dad Dr. Who scarves from a pattern I found online.

are those socks not the bomb? :) i love knitty, and upon showing them to my husband got an immediate request for them :)

now that i've seen that scarf too (don't know how i missed it, thank you!) i'll have to make him one of those as well!

you might want to check out real men knit - i'm positive you could learn how, and these would be great (and manly!) first projects!

I am a knitter, and an avid reader/subscriber of Knitty.com....as soon as I saw those I KNEW I had to make them...problem is I have to make 2 of each...for me and my honey...we will be the matching geek couple!

I wonder how many readers of your blog will out themselves as knitters because of this post. I think you may be surprised by how many geeks are knitters, too! I know I am!

I had to do it.

I took a few rows (11111001 10001111 01000110 11011000 10000101) and a quick conversion gives "ùFØ…"

Whoa.

Unless she's into 1337 5p33|< too?

Doubleplusgeekygood.

Hehe, I think we had an influx of knitters from that one time the Clown Sweater picture came out in the knitting community. I saw the Space Invaders pattern and thought it was way awesome. Haha.

I'm a knitter, too, and the first thing I thought was, "I should totally make that scarf and send it to Wil." I wonder how many scarfs he'll get? lol

Hmmmm...what size are your feet?

yeah, i saw those socks yesterday when the issue came out and i thought that i totally had to make them! my husband thought they were pretty cool too.

Yep, another knitter here. I'd love to make the socks but the scarf would drive me nuts. Too long! The socks are amazing. I'll bet my son would actually wear those!

I'm also wondering how many of these you'll receive as gifts. You should totally learn to knit but those are a bit advanced for first projects. Don't drive yourself crazy.

PRETTY COLORS!!!!!

:)

uhhhh, i meant your site... not so much the scarf.

I've been working on the binary scarf for a friend - but I upped the geek ante and actually wrote a personal message in it.

Then, I decided that I would like a pi scarf. The only problem is that I have to knit it upside-down and backwards, in order to be able to start with 3.14159...

Resistance is Futile...

I saw the space invaders socks, today... and have decided that that shall be my next knitting conquest!

Perhaps you can knit some sense into This Knucklehead!

I feel like a bit of a cyber-stalker for admitting this but I'm a Knitty reader and IMMEDIATELY thought of you, Wil, when I saw that scarf.

With your SciFi cred I thought you might like my very own Dr Who hat and my son's CyberSweater (it says "delete" on his rear).

You ARE watching the new Who, aren't you?

Ah I love the scarf! Though I'd have to make sure each row spelled out something. Hmm, write a program in assembler, translate it to... Oh jeez.

OMG ME WANTS!

Heh, didn't even have to click the links to know the patterns you were talking about. Here's another badass geek knit: http://www.twosheep.com/helix/

I don't knit, but thankfully I have talented friends who do, who now have that pattern and offers for compensation for time/materials (which they likely won't take anyways) to make me one of each. I'm giddy that they agreed!

Thank you for posting the links Wil! I can't wait to get this now.

I'd make them for you if you didn't have so many offers already. ^_^ You're too popular!!

The Happiest Days of Our Lives

  • These are the stories Wil loves to tell, because they are the closest to his heart: stories about being a huge geek, passing his geeky hobbies and values along to his own children, and vividly painting what it meant to grow up in the ’70s and come of age in the ’80s as part of the video game/D&D/BBS/Star Wars figures generation.

Buy Just A Geek: The Audiobook

  • "This journey is a fascinating read, made even more intimate and fulfilling by Wil's narrative. This is not just an audio book, it's a glimpse into the psyche of the man who considers himself . . . Just a Geek."
