Radio Free Burrito: Episode Nine

Inspired by Goldfinger (the movie, not the band) and alone and a little bored in an empty house while my family is away, I decided to do a special episode of Radio Free Burrito.

This is entirely a music show, playing Exotica, Easy Listening, and Lounge Music from Comfort Stand Records, which is totally awesome and releases its artists under a Creative Commons License.

I had a giant pile of fun doing this show, and I hope you have a good time listening to it.

Show Notes:

This episode weighs in at 37 minutes, is 18.3 MB, and is in m4a format, instead of mp3 format, because I'm tired and not in the mood to remember how to convert it to an mp3 that still sounds good. I don't think it's that big a deal at the moment, because the size appears to be consistent with older episodes of the good old RFB.

Download radio_free_burrito_episode_nine.m4a

Enjoy!

Update: Our good friend and Torrent-Creating Guy Mann Dude, Brian has created two different .torrent files for Super Happy Funtimes:

High (orig):
http://athena.unearthed.org/torrents/radio_free_burrito_episode_nine.m4a.torrent

Low (mono, VBR bit rate range 0-24, 6.7 megs):
http://athena.unearthed.org/torrents/radio_free_burrito_episode_nine-low.mp3.torrent

Thanks for the .torrents, Brian, and thank you to everyone else who sent in comments or feedback. It's awesome to hear from listeners who enjoyed the show, and inspires me to do more in the mysterious future.

Yet another audio gem from the Wil-meister. It had a very "broadcasting-from-the-middle-of-nowhere" feel to it much like the old "Guy Guden's Space Pirate Radio" show back in the mid to late 80's from Y-97 and KTYD in Santa Barbara, CA.

Fear not Wil. Your efforts have once again achieved the desired result.

P.S.: Digital media conversion is my forte. If you'd like me to email you the MP3 conversion (which I'm going to do anyway for personal archival storage), drop a comment or post with a yea or nay.

Love the pimp costume! Oh... That wasn't a pimp costume? I'm sorry.

this music reminds of the the "beatnik" type cartoons like "three little bops" Lately I have been listening to a lot of "chillout" music but this is some cool shit!

Great episode, Wil! Having missed previous installments, I immediately jumped over to your podcast page and the anal-retentive in me was horrified to discover the lack of an Episode 002. Fortunately, just before slashing my wrists (in the modern longitudinal manner), I read "Yes, this should be called Episode Two. I am an idiot." No, you're not, but thank you for saving my life...

Yay, another episode of RFB! I've honestly missed that!

Using iTunes 7 on WinXP, links and images just worked fine,
although only if you downloaded it completely first; open as URL didn't work for me.

As for CC music, here's a Bond-like song (more like an end-title song, less lounge-like): http://ccmixter.org/people/phusion/phusion_-_ophelias_symphony.mp3

VEKdigital, if you wouldn't mind, I would love for you to shoot a copy of the MP3 version to mamaslyth at gmail dot com. I can hear only part of this one. It keeps stalling on me after the first song. :(

Wil, it must of been something in the air last night. After working on an art journal, I had to find a recording of an old song I was mesmerized with as a young person, listening to my parents' oldies collection - http://www.esnips.com/doc/68dac736-d93c-4d64-ad39-04b2b6bf2cfb/Georgia-Gibbs---Kiss-Of-Fire

How stimulating, Wil! And what a coincidence! I've been on a real lounge kick the last week or so! Thanks for the excellent tunes!

To return the favor, I think you'll get a kick out of Fantastic Plastic Machine. His music is hard to get a hold of here in the States, but you can listen to a few tunes on his MySpace profile:

(For a real kitschy treat, check out "Mr. Fantasy's Love")

Thanks for the excellent WilCast, and I hope we can look forward to another, soon! :)

Loved the music, loved the radio voice. I admit I have a knee jerk reaction to the names of artists or groups that I have not heard of, such that I'm sure I'm not going to like the music. I listed on lark and was pleasantly surprised. For the tag line, Bob Barker's is now available, or a variant "Control the Radical Right population, have..."

This is strange. Sitting on my chair in my living room in the Netherlands I'm listining to an American broadcast and hear a Dutch commercial.
For a moment I wondered what kind of magic you used to add a commercial in the language of the listener before I realized that this must be a joke.
How does Dutch sound like to the Amercan ear?

Good stuff and WELL DONE! The Dutch ads sound like a tape recorder with a bad head.

:-D

Your radio 'persona' is comin right along Wil - keep em comin.

When I saw the RFB logo on top of this post I screamed with joy like a little girl.

Hey Wil, I'm one of the several hundred thousand fans of your blog that don't post--until now.
Thanks for the great podcast and the inspiration for my own blog/podcast sometime in the near future.
I've got a shitton of Martin Denny/Moog space mod music if you need more material for the next show. Hopefully if I can get my own blog going I can catalog some of that stuff as well.
Thanks again!

Thanks for the burrito! Cocktails in Space....wonderful MOOGtastic music from the 24th century! Between that and the Doctorow novelette, I'm wondering what kind of strange dreams I'll be having tonight. Maybe they'll be narrated by Joe Frank - yikes!

Dude...

Dude!

Right on. I finally got around to downloading RFB#9, and YES! Wherever you found this music, good job, because I found myself grooving hard the whole time. Get these creative bugs more often (as you can, of course), seriously.

If you had time and access to more CC licensed/indie music, you'd make a hell of a show host, Kasem and his outtakes be damned.

Speaking of which, sadly, I _used_ to have the two other clips that you mentioned, but they were lost long ago. Had them while I was in college, 10 freakin' years ago. Those hard drives have long since become paperweights. But I'm sure you can find them somewhere if you Google hard enough...

Just converted this to MP3 using Zamzar (popups, but free). You can enjoy it (like I'm about to do) here:

here

(hope this is alright Wil, if not please let me know and I'll cease @ desist!

iTunes has a converter to turn an m4p into an MP3, and you can adjust bitrate, etc. I use it for my own podcast.
Actually, you and your readers might like it, I co-host Boy Cow Radio with Curtiss Frisle, another X-Ray Company performer at ACME. We call it a podcast for nerds, by nerds.
It's currently hosted at www.collider.com, but we're trying to find a more permanent home. Check it out, just search Collider for Boy Cow for an episode listing.
Best,

I am home sick in bed and this is exactly what I need to feel better. Thanks Wil :)
~~TARA~~

For the first song...
Start doing the Carlton Dance and singing "It's not unusual to be loved by anyone" ; )

I´ve pretty much made peace with the idea of being a consumer. But what would creators be without consumers ;)

Being a Dutch end-of-my-thirties, those commercials timewarped me right back to younger days. Being from The Hague I can tell you our local accent is sometime to make a grown Klingon cry. I mastered to speak it without too much spit ;)

The costume must be for the evil space pimp bad guy in the next Star Trek movie.

Yeezis ffing Keerist, the commercial that kicked in at 27:13 knocked me of my sockswas for a radio electronics shop in my home town The Hague, it´s probably for a local pirate radio station. The accent is not from here, it´s what was supposed to be accent-free Dutch in the sixties, which means that no one in his right mind would speak like that.
btw Radio Veronique doesn´t exist anymore, there´s a New Age center called Trance-Art at that address.

I´ve been gradually collecting the Ultra Lounge collection - up to eight of them now I think. Lounge is one of my all time fave´s and I did indeed own a tiki bar.

Thanks a lot for the great music, I´ve had lounge on all day now. Anytime you want to do this again, I´m all up for it!

Hey, I've got a selection of recordings of tech support calls (I think to Apple) in mp3 format. Notable are a fellow with a totally impenetrable accent and a person crying because a busted system ate her paper (that one makes me wince, because I've been on both ends of that phone call), as well as somebody who has no idea what a paper clip is. Got 'em? If not, I can send them your way.

I tried to email you at the podcast address, but get returned mail "unknown user". Figured it would be easier to just leave my comment here for an idea for a future music themed Radio Free Burrito.

Cool &/or obscure covers!

We're of the same generation and have very similar music tastes. Now generally I don't like covers, but there are some that do the original justice. Here's a sample of songs I was thinking of for this idea.

"I Will Survive" - Cake
"Just Like Heaven" - Dinosaur Jr.
"Build Me Up, Buttercup" - The Goops (on the Mallrats soundtrack)
"What A Wonderful World" - Joey Ramone
"Stand By Me" - Pennywise
"Head On" - Pixies (originally a Jesus & Mary Chain song)
"Common People" - William Shatner

And an artist that you could have mentioned in your last podcast, Richard Cheese. The guy who does lounge covers of modern songs, like "Down With the Sickness" and "Rape Me".

The only problem about this podcast would be that these aren't under a Creative Commons license. But I had to share some great covers with you anyway!

Hope to hear another Radio Free Burrito episode sometime soon, and I can't wait until your new book is out.

Will, excellent podcast. Loved the lounge music! Thanks, and keep 'em coming!

:`$ sudo do an ogg file as well next time

The Happiest Days of Our Lives

  • These are the stories Wil loves to tell, because they are the closest to his heart: stories about being a huge geek, passing his geeky hobbies and values along to his own children, and vividly painting what it meant to grow up in the ’70s and come of age in the ’80s as part of the video game/D&D/BBS/Star Wars figures generation.

Buy Just A Geek: The Audiobook

  • "This journey is a fascinating read, made even more intimate and fulfilling by Wil's narrative. This is not just an audio book, it's a glimpse into the psyche of the man who considers himself . . . Just a Geek."
