Sidewalk Surfin' in 1980

I got a completed, lettered, toned copy of my story for the Star Trek Manga from my editor at TokyoPop earlier today, and I took a break from proofing my manuscript to read it.

Oh man, it's as cool as I hoped it would be, and seeing words I wrote come out of the characters I love (Kirk, Spock) and the characters I created was just awesome. The artist and toner did outstanding work, and I can't wait for this book to be published. Most unexpected surprise? They chose my story to lead off the book. Rock.

After reading my Trek story, I went back to proofing my book, and I finished about an hour ago. It is completely ready to go to the printer . . . just as soon as they tell me what the ftp information is, hopefully in the morning.

Wow. It's really done.

In celebration of this moment, I present this photo of me, on my skateboard, in front of my childhood house, with my little sister in 1980, maybe '81.

Congratulations Wil! Looking forward to reading the book.

Congratulations and I look forward to reading both the book and the manga. I'm really curious to see Star Trek re-imagined through a manga-colored lens.

Can't wait for your new book!!!!!

I like the childhood pictures you post. It takes me back to my childhood because all my baby/kid pictures look just like that one- orangy/yellowish in color, curved corners and the hideous "style" of the clothing of the late 70s/early 80s.

w000000000000t you're done!!

I'm jealous. I wish I could say the same.

It's not a manga, it's a graphic nov- Oh, wait. Nevermind.

:D

You've finished a thing. That, as I'm sure you know, is a victory and a success in itself.

I look forward to reading both. Congratulations, Wil.

Awesome! You're still doing some signed copies right? ~_^

I can't wait to read it either way!

Congrats on completing both projects!

Skateboarding = awesome. When I was a kid I had a thin yellow skateboard that we got from Goodwill. It had alignment issues and I could never get it to roll straight. But I still felt cool on it. :)

Cheers!

Wil- being the raging geek you are, and that you have a lovely geek following, are you putting support behind the Internet Radio Equality Act? Tim Westergren
asked for people to call their senators and congress people...are you doing anything to help push the bill to vote? Or do you think being bent over by the RIAA is a good thing?

"Skateboards, I've almost made them respectable."

-Joe Jackson, I'm the Man.

Congrats on the book, dude. Collaboration is cool, isn't it?

Congratulations! It takes a lot to push through all the internal resistance when you write, and now you have a tangible proof that you persevered, which is hawesome. Enjoy the well-earned feeling of accomplishment!

Aren't sk8ters in the cool crowd? You can't be a geek...

Congrats on finishing both books. I am looking forward to reading them.
I love the goofy grin you have, but those shorts!!!
~~TARA~~

Woo Hoo! Way to go Wil! Fortunately, you still have a lot of fun work ahead to avoid the post-ginormous-project-blues.

I think you should celebrate by reproducing the skateboard picture. The shorts might be hard to come by, but your wife could stand in for your sister and surely there is a subaru outback in the neighborhood somewhere. ;)

I think we all wore a tank like that back in 80...hey, I took up the challenge to use Wes in the last KvP round, did you get a chance to see it?

congrats all around. Looking forward to seeing racks and stacks in the stores.

Wil congratulations!!! I can't wait to get my hands on the new book! I'm so happy for you and probably way more excited then I should be. But hey if fellow geeks can't get excited for ya, who can?

I love the photo. We have way to many of those in our family. I was always off to the side like your sister trying to make sure my brothers didn't fall off and maim themselves on the darn skateboards. LOL

Congrats on the magna whatsit...Never been into the whole graphic novel/anime/magna scene, but I might have to check this out.
Also got the pic in the mail today. THat was quick =)

Nice Blog Will. I gotta say, it's cool to see that your busy. I'm the same age as you and grew up on The Next Generation and pretty much wanted to be you. Well, after your character stopped wearing that queer rainbow outfit anyway. What happened with the movies? How come you did'nt get into them?
Take care man.

Congratulations! Looking forward to reading your new book!

I love that you've got old pictures scanned in for sharing. Something I've been meaning to get to for some time. Did you use just a regular scanner or something spiffy that geeks "in the know" use?

Love the blog!

Love your old family photos. Looks like you had blond hair in this one. Commenting on a previous post with your Darth Vader costume, I wore a Flash Gordon costume made of cardboard and covered with tin foil. It was for a Mardi Gras parade rather than Halloween.

Hey Wil...I don't know whether you'll be relieved or disappointed, but you didn't make the Top 20 Celebrity Bloggers list on EW.com. I'm guessing you're relieved, but I went through the whole thing thinking the next one was going to be you. :0(

Nothing can define this moment better than:

W00t!!!!

Hey Wil, do you want to hear something that's not fair? Too bad I'll tell you anyway:) My mom got her autograph in the mail today, and I didn't. She only ordered hers after I ordered mine (I think I was one if not the 1st to order). She even came by my work to brag that she got hers first. Not fair! Oh well, hopefully mine will be here tomorrow.
~~TARA~~

Wil,

To me, it seems like you are always writing books. I wish you good luck with this one. Other readers say you need none of my luck. Keep up the good work.

The Happiest Days of Our Lives

  • These are the stories Wil loves to tell, because they are the closest to his heart: stories about being a huge geek, passing his geeky hobbies and values along to his own children, and vividly painting what it meant to grow up in the ’70s and come of age in the ’80s as part of the video game/D&D/BBS/Star Wars figures generation.

Buy Just A Geek: The Audiobook

  • "This journey is a fascinating read, made even more intimate and fulfilling by Wil's narrative. This is not just an audio book, it's a glimpse into the psyche of the man who considers himself . . . Just a Geek."
