magic hour
The sky was on fire when I ran inside to get the camera. By the time I got back out to take some pictures, it had cooled to this beautiful pink. I love the way the palm tree is silhouetted against the sky.
What you can't see, but I can hopefully describe now, is how the entire sky cast a soft pink glow down on the entire world from the mountains, to our house, to the street in front of it.
Hrm. It's not the same, but if you were lucky, maybe you got to see something like it with your own eyes tonight.

Hey, bbaydar, I'm from Nova Scotia, too :-)
Happy New Year all.

Hey Wil - you had lots of time on British tv last night commmenting on top films of the eighties. Good to see Stand By Me right up there, but The Breakfast Club was my favourite 80s movie.

I see sunsets like that all the time- minus the palm trees-but that's because I work outdoors on evening shifts.
That's just one of the many perks of living in the Valley( the Willamette).
Of course, I never have a camera handy, even though I keep telling myself to bring one... Good job!

I missed this particular sunset but we DO get some incredible sunsets in West L.A. too. About a month or two ago when we had all those massive fires and the smoke was everywhere, the sky was a massive red and the Sun was redder than a flare. It was unearthly.
As beautiful as these sunsets are, it tells me that humans need to do something about our planet's ecosystems. Things are going haywire.

I was just watching the Rose Bowl game on TV (go USC) They showed a beautiful sunset (not as nice as your Magic Hour); the mountains were all aglow in pink hue. In New Mexico they named the crimson mountains Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ).
Hope you have a blessed new year.

I live in northern Arizona and we get sunsets like that pretty frequently. I have a nice collection of photos of them as well. Every time another one happens, though, it's just as special.
