Last night, I read that comic book Kinetic that the owner of my Friendly Local Comic Shop recommended to me when I was in last week.
It's something that I never would have picked up based on the cover or description, and I'm really glad that I have the relationship I have with my Friendly Local Comic Shop owner, because it's quite good.
Essentially, a boy who is stricken with several different ailments discovers that he has become invincible. The story is about how he deals with the discovery, and how it impacts his life. It has strong characters, including his mother and this girl who he has a crush on, and though DC only let it run for 8 issues (it was part of the DC Focus line, which didn't last very long) the collection has a satisfying story arc that doesn't feel like it was cut-off in the middle of its run.
It's well-written, and I really liked the artwork and the coloring; my initial impression that it was "what I imagine Black Hole would look like if it were color and more mainstream" turns out to be pretty accurate (at least in my mind.)
It's unlike any of the other things I've recently read or reviewed, but that's one of the reasons I enjoyed it. If you're looking for something that's a fairly quick read, but worth the time, check it out.
