I didn't do it on purpose, but the comic book habit I had as a teenager has slowly crept back into my life.
I blame Warren Ellis more than anyone else, because books like Planetary are as rewarding on multiple reads as Watchmen, and there's few things that give voice to the darkest parts of my soul like Transmetropolitan. I've never been a big superhero action explosions kinda guy (other than Batman,) but I haven't had as much pure, unadulterated, unapologetic fun reading a book as I have with Nextwave. Damn you, Warren Ellis. Damn you with chopsticks!
I still haven't gotten into any current books (catching up on a decade's worth of graphic novels and trade paperback collections is keeping me very happy, indeed,) but sooner or later I'm going to be making that bi-monthly trip to Comics Factory and working on brand new excuses to use on my wife to justify the growing pile of books that nobody else is allowed to touch.
Anyway, I mention this for two reasons:
- I wanted to encourage people to pick up Nextwave, because it's really awesome. I'll let Warren Ellis make my case for me:
"I took The Authority and I stripped out all the plots, logic, character and sanity. It’s an absolute distillation of the superhero genre. No plot lines, characters, emotions, nothing whatsoever. It’s people posing in the street for no good reason. It is people getting kicked, and then exploding. It is a pure comic book, and I will fight anyone who says otherwise. And afterwards, they will explode."
- I read a fantastic story at MeFi today (via Waxy) about what is purported to be the greatest comic collection ever found, that blew my mind. I think many of you will like it.
